With the ever growing base of creativity posting site “Tik Tok”, the music world is adapting along with it. Viral songs that have gained popularity from the app are making their way to the mainstream. Songs like “Eyes” and “Sunroof” have blown up small unknown artists into big one hit wonder hotshots. A lot of people enjoy this kind of stuff, but I on the other hand… do not. Most people either are interested in music or aren’t interested in music, leaving not a lot of room in between. I feel like a lot of people who don’t like music as much mainly listen while in the car or hear things on social media or even video games. Especially with Tik Tok being a musical based app, artists with growing fame and also artists with much past work are blowing up into the eyes of un musically cultured individuals due to their popularity. Personally being quite adamant in my music findings and listening, it really bugs me when I have someone come at me trying to show me the cool song or artist they found on Tik Tok that I already have plenty of intel about. This might be because I have a tendency to want to gate keep my music or maybe the fact that the lack of culture angers me but either way, Tik Tok popular songs piss me off.
I feel like the upsrising coming from musically and spreading into Tik Tok, Reels, Shorts, etc. is all going in this same unfortunate direction. Everyone is so drawn in by these doom scrolling apps where they get to the point that it takes up most of their freetime. This is so much deeper in kids too because of how maleable and changeable children are at a young age. At this point all kids know the exact same 30 seconds of a song and all culture from other genres and times is kind of dimmed and looked past. If the diversity in music moves down and stays in one sort of focus, so does the music industries influence. If Tik Tok can almost choose what you hear the most and tailor what you listen to, it’s almost like they can control you. As Tik Tok grows, so does their grasp on the media.
